The key to a SWATH vessel's stability is the two lower hulls that are completely submerged beneath the surface of the water (unlike a catamaran where the hulls ride on the surface of the water). Research shows that the water is calmer just a few feet below the choppy surface. The SWATH's lower hulls, which provide buoyancy, are located in this calmer water which makes the boat ride much smoother. This in turn provides the feeling of being on a much larger vessel.
Catamarans provide large, broad decks but have higher resistance to rough seas than SWATH vessels of comparable size. To reduce some of that resistance, as much displacement volume as possible is moved to the lower hull and the waterline cross-section is narrowed sharply, creating the distinctive pair of bulbous hulls below the waterline and the narrow struts supporting the upper hull. This design means that the vessel's underwater volume runs mostly under the waves, like a submarine. The result is that a fairly small vessel can run very steady in rough seas.
"The ease of operation as well as it's economical performance has proved beneficial to the mission of this command."
